Walks

Fyrish Monument

This is a popular walk for us and will likely take over an hour from the car park to the summit where you will find the magnificent monument. Fairly steep at times can offer a challenge to some walkers. The path is gullied in places, with loose surfaces, so boots are advised. Fyrish is in an isolated position, so on clear days there are extensive views in all directions. The large, unusual monument at the summit is very photogenic (and offers a sheltered lunch site in bad weather).

Award Winning Royal Dornoch Beach

18 miles from us

Award winning and one of the best beaches in the highlands. Great for dog walkers, wide sandy beaches mean you will never experience a busy beach in Dornoch.

To find the beach you take a leisurely stroll from Dornoch town centre past the caravan park to the beach. On the way you will pass the Witch’s Stone on Carnaig Street (the spot where the last execution in Scotland for witchcraft took place). There is a play park for children on your right just before you reach the beach.

Come straight back along the road through the Royal Dornoch Golf Course (watch out for golf balls!) or spend some time relaxing on the beach before returning to Dornoch.

Black Rock Gorge

9 miles from us

This is a great walk for trepid explorers. This short woodland walk from Evanton visits the Black Rock Gorge, an unexpectedly dramatic box canyon which featured in the film of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Nearby fishing village Portmahomack beach

16 miles from us

This lovely sheltered beach lies on the western edge of the pretty seaside village of Portmahomack on the Tarbat peninsula. This area is in the Moray Firth conservation area and dolphins and even whales might be spotted out at sea. … The beach is mainly sandy, backed by sea-grasses and curves gently round the bay.

Tarbat Ness Lighthouse

18 miles from us

The Tarbat Ness Lighthouse is located at the North West tip of the Tarbat Ness peninsula near the fishing village of Portmahomack on the east coast of Scotland. It was built in 1830 by Robert Stevenson and has an elevation of 53 metres and 203 steps to the top of the tower. Fantastic walk with great rocks to (carefully) climb with small pools of water making your way to one of the tips of the UK

Dunrobin Castle

27 miles from us

Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland’s great houses and the largest in the Northern Highlands with 189 rooms. Dunrobin Castle is also one of Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited houses dating back to the early 1300s, home to the Earls and later, the Dukes of Sutherland.

The Castle, which resembles a French château with its towering conical spires, has seen the architectural influences of Sir Charles Barry, who designed London’s Houses of Parliament, and Scotland’s own Sir Robert Lorimer. The Castle was used as a naval hospital during the First World War and as a boys’ boarding school from 1965 to 1972.

Dunrobin Castle is on the east coast of the Northern Highlands overlooking the Moray Firth, just north of the villages of Golspie and Dornoch.

Breath-taking views, beautiful gardens and one of the most magnificent castles in the highlands.

Chanonry Point – Dolphin Spotting

28 miles from us

The most popular place to see dolphins is probably a good indicator of the best place to see them! That’s Chanonry Point between Fortrose and Rosemarkie on the Black Isle. This narrow peninsula is an ideal location with views across the Moray Firth to Fort George and with lots of fellow dolphin watchers you are unlikely to miss any sightings.

Dolphin activity here is influenced by tidal conditions. Dolphins at Chanonry Point can be seen at anytime (and not at all!) but the best time to see them is usually on a rising tide. From around 1 hour after low tide, the tide turns and dolphins start to chase fish in. This means if you know tide times for a particular day, you can work out the best time to see dolphins at Chanonry Point. There is no guarantee of seeing dolphins but you can maximise your chances.

If you are lucky enough to see dolphins, you’ll often be incredibly close and only a matter of metres from them as they feed in the channel.
