To us he is a pink, friendly, lovable Kune Kune cross pot-bellied pig. More than just your average pig, he is part of our Delny Glamping family.
If you’ve been lucky enough to meet “Our Kev” you’ll know he always greets you with a smile when you approach his pen.
He is so much more than what we first expected life with a pig would be.
Why a Pot Bellied Pig?
Claire and I love animals and I had always wanted a farm of some description. Slowly Delny Glamping is so much more than just your average glampsite on the NC500. We now have a small holding of animals from our adorable Pygmy goats Tina and Cher, our friendly ducks and quirky chickens.
A pig had always been on my list of “would loves” and at the end of 2019 I came across a post on facebook from a friendly guy near Glasgow offering Kevin to a good home.
His previous home was a livery so he was surrounded by horses. The owner had a vision of setting up a petting zoo and Kevin was going to be one of the stars of his show! Unfortunately things didn’t go to plan hence the reason Kevin was looking for a new home.
Claire and I knew we could source a pig locally, one that we could collect only 10mins drive from us. But…we knew something was different with Kevin. We were sent photos and videos of him interacting with others and knew he was different and well worth the 4 hour drive to collect him.
So, after some too-ing and throwing we made the decision he was going to be ours! That weekend we made the journey to Glasgow to meet our new friend Kevin.
Bringing our Kevin Home
When we arrived to meet Kevin for the first time we were a little nervous about his size and not entirely sure what we were letting ourselves in for. He was being kept in a stable, as we approached his stable he started to push at the door trying to force his way out. My immediate thoughts were “How much is this going to cost me in extra fencing” “What will we do if he escapes”. Claire’s immediate response however was utter love! His adorable natures and personality won over Claire immediately and from that point onward he could do no wrong!
With a little persuasion we had Kevin in the back of our friends cattle trailer for the journey home. We stopped a couple of times during the journey back to give him some food and water but he was completely unphased.
Welcome Kevin to Delny
As we arrived we introduced Kevin to his fellow “Animal Pen Mates”. Tina and Cher were very intrigued. Kevin on the other hand acted as though this had always been his home. We encouraged him to his bed so he could take claim to his throne (former plastic oil tank).
Life with Kevin
Its now May 2020 and Kevin is very much a main player in our Delny family. He has had a couple of successful escapes but fortunately for us, being a pig he is easily directed back to his pen when presented with a hand full of treats! A set of chickens now sleep with Kevin during the day and one for some reason likes to ride his back in the mornings during breakfast. You can certainly say he is settled and well loved by all.
